Situation
Youth ages 15 to 24 are experiencing an extremely high rate of unemployment in Bangladesh . The UN statistical division took data for the Millenium Development Goals, and found that in 1996 70.3 per cent of Bangladeshi youth were unemployed; in 2000 that number increased to 79.4 per cent. YPSA seeks to eradicate poverty among youths through building and creating new opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
Initiative
YPSA attempted to address youth employment by providing and organizing:
- Self-employment for youths through the provision of training and micro credit
- Training sessions entitled Enterprise Development and Business Management and Enterprise Development.
Outcomes
So far 150 youths have attended training sessions at YPSA's Human Resource Development Centre in Sitakund. After they attended the training sessions, youth members received loans from YPSA's Participatory Savings and Credit Program to start up their enterprises. For example, youth entrepreneurs have set up micro enterprises related to agriculture, nursery and gardening, handicrafts, mat weaving, poultry, fish cultivation, livestock, etc.
