Purpose of the project-
To promote smoke free local government and public spaces within Chittagong Division, by advocating for smoke free policies and practice at City Corporation and Municipal level as a preventive and regulatory mechanism in compliance with National Smoking and Tobacco control Act 2005
Objectives
- Inform, persuade and form a coalition of supportive government institution, local business, journalists, non governmental organizations and community based organizations in Chittagong Division by September 2009.
- Support the development and adoption of the model institutional policies for Chittagong city corporation and 3 Municipalities in Cox;s Bazar, Commilla and Feni Districts by June 2010
- Strengthen the enforcement of 100% smoke free policies and practice in Chittagong city corporation and 3 municipalities by December 2010
- Enhance sharing of experiences and knowledge across model institutions to allow replication of promising practices and lesson in smoking and tobacco control in Chittagong division, other cities and nationally.
Geographical Coverage
Project is being implemented in 4 selected local government areas namely Chittagong City Corporation, Cox Bazaar, Comilla and Feni municipalities in 4 Districts in Chittagong Division.
Project Duration
24 Months (April 2009-March 2011)
Partnerships
Partnership building is a core approach applied in the project implementation. To enable realization of the project objectives YPSA has been building partnership with;
- Chittagong City Corporation
- The Municipal administrations of Feni, Comilla and Cox’s Bazar district
- Taskforce Committees of Tobacco Control Law at District level
- District Press Clubs
- The Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA); YPSA will work with the alliance platform to advocate for stronger national and regional coordination and enforcement of the national law
- Work for Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust
- National Tobacco Control Cell
- YPSA intends to involve a wide range of stakeholders to including the Ministry of Health, and Family Welfare and Ministry of Home Affairs

- Establish a proactive civil society coalition
- Capacity Need Assessment
- Develop model institutional policy
- Advocacy and lobbing for the adoption and 100% enforcement of the smoke free policy
- Publications like Poster, sticker, digital talking book, booklet
- Public awareness through rallies
- Hold press briefing
- Develop report card on the progress of developing and Implementation of the institutional policies and national law
- Participate and share experiences in relevant national and international forum
- Organize and support International and National exposure visit
